Welcome!

I believe that therapy should be a safe place, where you are the expert in your own story, and all things can be discussed.

If it is something that is affecting you, regardless of how big or small it seems, it is something that deserves love, care, and attention. The therapy room is a place where people can bring their full, authentic selves without being judged as lesser than for the things they do not do, or too much for the things they do.

A little more about me…

  • My name is Kristi Kanehen. I am an avid reader and love being in nature. I like to create things - writing, water coloring, knitting, and crocheting amigurumi.

I love sharing meals with family and friends and talking and laughing together (which my children have informed me is a very boring adult thing to do).

I am married and have two school age kids.

My family is from Hawai’i but I lived in Southern California for most of my growing up. I moved back to Hawai’i when I was in high school and then to Washington for school and have been here ever since.

I’ve had the experience of navigating being Japanese-American in Hawai’i, So Cal, and Washington and belonging to all and also no place at the same time.

  • I often see multiracial couples, those that identify as women in the global majority in any stage of life, those in the peripartum period, or going through pain points in life. I am also interested in working with people who are in educational or health settings.

While I see a range of clients, I work primarily with anxiety, perfectionism, depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

I welcome LGBTQIA+ clients (so you don't have to guess).

  • You still can! Feeling comfortable and safe with your therapist is highly important so if you are interested we can set up a free consult call and go from there

  • I am a direct person and therefore I am a direct therapist. My goal is to approach all clients with curiosity, respect, and openness. Life is funny and has funny moments - even when (maybe especially when) it is hard. Humor and laughter are part of the human experience so it is not uncommon to both laugh, cry, and feel frustrated by circumstances in one session.

Every person is different so I use a variety of modalities. I draw from a variety of systems theories, internal family systems, and cognitive based therapy.

For OCD, I utilize a combination of I-CBT, ACT for OCD, and ERP.
